September 2004
The first time I heard about Tom McRae was from my sister. She had gotten a tapetrade (back when folks still traded tapes) and we were driving back home from someplace and Hidden Camera Show came on. The song made me think back to the period of time where, unfortunately, high school shootings were becoming more common. That moment of shock, bewilderment and unanswered whys; the song struck a chord. When I asked Cathy who the artist was, she muttered: Tom McRae. To which I interpreted her response as Tommy Gray. After about a minute or two of this going back and forth, I learned about the artist TOM MC-RAE.
Fast forward a couple of months later (with lots of airplay of Hidden Camera Showon KCRW) and I meet Ellen. At the time, she was a classmate of mine in Chinese 101 class. It wasn't until a session in the Language Lab where we were both goofing off and not doing our assigned work that we realized we were both checking/updating our LiveJournals. We exchanged LJ aliases, and as I got to know Ellen more both in class and online, I discovered her fascination with this person named Tom. Lo and behold: that Tom was Tom McRae.
One day, Ellen decided to accompany me to see Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Over a nice chat and dulche de leche ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, I agreed to accompany her to a Tom McRae performance at Hotel Cafe. The rest you could say, is history. I went, I listened, I enjoyed. I was Tominated. I wanted to share.
